Lost Finale: The End

WARNING: POST CONTAINS EPISODE SPOILERS

I'm still processing last night's episode, but I find that I'm pretty much on the fence. I'm glad the Losties found their happy ending, reunited and together again, but I can't help but feel like the writers copped out (and some parts were pure cheese). Not one real answer, although I suppose I should have known better than to expect any. Maybe they just want us to buy the DVD?  (insert eye roll here)

I guess the writers would say that answers weren't the point of the series. Perhaps not, but after stringing me along for years I would still appreciate a few answers, in addition to all the light imagery and boo-hooing over Jack's journey (and, really, was anyone surprised that he was the one to make the final sacrifice?) I'm not a hundred percent sure what I'm supposed to take away from it all other than we all die at one point or another, its all real, but there is no real "now." Okey dokey. I guess the whole point was the characters' evolution? That the island was just what facilitated their changing and growing? Blah. Call me greedy, but I wanted more than that.

I think a lot of the little things were well done. Vincent lying down beside Jack as he was dying was beautiful. Not even Jack had to die alone (the running shoe in the tree was also a nice touch). Ben deciding to wait outside the church to "sort some things out" was appropriate. Loved Juliet and Sawyer finding one another again and Sawyer and Jack's handshake. The scenes between Jack and Locke were also so well done. I did find the whole Kate-Jack thing kind of forced. I know they were engaged off-island, but it seems like any time she actually had a choice between Jack and Sawyer she chose Sawyer so why the change now? Maybe because Kate finally realized that Sawyer wouldn't have her anymore? Lame. Although I will say that I liked that Kate's a-ha moment was delivering Aaron and not when she first spotted the Doc.

In true LOST style the finale just left me with more questions. So what happens to the ones who got off the island on the plane? To Hurley and Ben? Did Desmond ever get back to Penny? I guess we get to make up our own stories for the characters, imagine what we would like to have happened...I just feel like something was missing, that there should have been more meat.

A Multi-Faith Afterlife

I'm not sure what else there is to say. I guess some gnawing questions will just go unanswered. It seems that the writers wanted the ending to be somewhat ambiguous. All I do know is that LOST, even with it's flaws, was one of my favourite television shows ever. I loved the tongue-in-cheek writing, the Easter eggs, the relationships, the humor. I'll miss it for sure. Hopefully other television writers will heed the example of LOST--I think there is room on television for a convoluted, difficult to follow, but ultimately intelligent and challenging show. So, in the words of Jimmy Kimmel, aloha LOST. It was nice knowing you.

Lost Wednesdays: What They Died For

WARNING: POST CONTAINS EPISODE SPOILERS

"I thought that guy had a God complex before."

Oh, how I love Sawyer. And Miles when he made that "Are you sure this is a short cut?" comment after he, Ben and Richard had been walking in the jungle for three episodes. I am going to miss this show something fierce. Even though it usually reduces me to screaming, begging and occasionally throwing things, it has been a really great run regardless of how it ends. That said, I am really expecting them to bring it on Sunday and I can't wait.

 

I'm not at all surprised that Jack jumped at Jacob's job, but I wish Jacob would have been clearer in his explanations and instructions (even with the fire burning away he seemed reluctant to spill!) That said there were a lot of beautiful moments in the episode: Jack stitching up Kate on the beach at the beginning (talk about coming full circle) and Sawyer so pensive, it was moving. I guess it was nice that Jacob gave them a choice (and I thought the explanation of Kate's crossed out name was good - "it's just a chalk line in a cave"), although I'm not sure how they are supposed to take on NotLocke in Smoke Monster form. I suppose it all boils down to Desmond (where IS Desmond, anyway?), he seems to be doing a pretty good job getting everyone together off island, too. That is going to be some concert.

 

Ben thoroughly entertained me, as always, and in this episode he did so both on island and off. I can't believe that he and Rousseau had sparks! And he totally killed Widmore! I'm thinking Richard's not dead, he'll probably swing in at an appropriate time to help save the day. There has to be some benefit to being an ageless immortal.

Okay, so two more hours. Aside from wanting to know all the mysteries of the island I would also like to find out what the deal is with Aaron (is he indeed special?) and who Jack's ex-wife is (Juliet, I presume?) What questions are you eager to have answered?

Lost Wednesdays: Across The Sea

I WANT A NAME. Just one. This is getting ridiculous! Is that going to be the whole payoff of this show? Finding out what the MiB's name is!? And I swear if it turns out he does't have a name because his mother got bashed in the head before she could give him one I will freak the f out! Seriously. 

 

Mother #1 and Mother #2

Sorry for the delay in posting this, but I've been kind of sitting around stunned since the episode last night. I'm trying to make sense of everything and pretty much failing. By LOST standards we got a lot of answers (how Smokey came to be, the Donkey Wheel, Adam and Eve), but it wasn't enough and I fear that--with only three hours left--none of it will be.

The Dynamic Duo

When Alison Janney's character said, "Every question I will answer will simply lead to another question" it seemed the writers were speaking directly to us. That best not be the attitude they approach this with, although it does seem to be true. We find out who the Matt Damon-kid-in-the-jungle is and then I'm left wondering why he's now appearing to MiB and some like Sawyer can also seem him. The questions will never end!

"You like him better than you like me!" Really, LOST?

The episode last night was slow and I just didn't think it was enough. Not at this stage in the game. Now we know that Jacob and MiB are twins, but we don't know where their mother came from, exactly. She spoke Latin and her name was Claudia so it all screams Roman era, but who the hell knows? We also got to meet the MiB's crazy "mother" except I'm not sure if she was really crazy. Mostly she just had the island disease of improper communication and vague explanations. Why can't these people just spell things out, especially when such vitally important things as the light going out in every man in the world being involved?! I also found it weird that halfway through their conversation Claudia and Mother 2 started speaking English. WTF?

When Jacob was all crying and telling Mother that even though he was good she loved MiB more it was a total Ben flashback to me. Never thought I would see such a similarity between those two. Its kind of disappointing to see that Jacob is just a really ordinary dude who drank a glass of wine and ended up being all immortal and stuff. (And was it just me or was there a real Jesus vibe when Jacob was given the wine to drink.) There were other similarities to episodes past, like with Claudia perhaps the first in a long line of pregnant women who come to the island only to have their babies stolen out from under them.

I was also disappointed with the whole glowing cave in the river thing. It seemed kind of...cheesy. Maybe it was just the way it was explained. So what I'm figuring is that MiB wasn't a bad guy (I actually felt for him during this episode) but that changed when he died all rage-filled and morphed into Smokey. And then Jacob needed to keep him on the island or the light will go out in the world or some such. I wonder how the new candidate will assume the position if Jacob isn't there to mumble over a glass of wine they must drink from. I also wonder who the father of this dynamic duo is.

So, three hours left, here's hoping that they will wrap this up in a way that doesn't make me feel like scratching out my eyes. What did you think?

Lost Wednesdays: The Candidate

WTF, writers? W. T. F.?! Sun and Jin and Sayid and Frank in the span of, what, five minutes? All I said to M was, "If they kill Sawyer I quit. I don't even care what happens after that. I. Quit." His bemused smile told me he didn't exactly believe me. I'm sure he was imagining me in the other room, hands over eyes, demanding he tell me every thing taking place on screen--in detail. Let's all hope for his sake Sawyer doesn't bite it.

The Island's Braintrust

I really don't even know where to begin. I guess its pretty certain that Jack is the candidate and the one who will save all. There were so many "trust me"s and "I'll fix you"s getting thrown around I was starting to get dizzy. What the implications of Parallel Universe Locke being in a plane crash that he caused, which paralyzed him and rendered Anthony Cooper a vegetable, I have no idea. I wonder if Anthony is still the guy Sawyer is looking for in the alt reality. (Did it seem to anyone else that Bernard remembered something when talking to Jack or seemed to know a little of the bigger picture of all of them being on the same plane?)

So, yeah, I still don't think it's all sunk in. I did see the whole C4 bit coming when NotLocke handed Jack his pack, but what I don't totally get is why the bomb went off. Wouldn't it have been like Richard's dynamite? Just fizzling out? Why did Sawyer pulling those wires suddenly make it go off? Didn't get that, but I would appreciate it if anyone could enlighten me!

Jack walking into the water at the end gave a whole Jesus-John The Baptist vibe to all the goings on. His crying face was awful, though. And of course Kate's gunshot wound is non-fatal. The only wounded person in the sub and of course she makes it out alive. Ugh. So now we have to hope that somehow the alternate reality people get back to the island to fix all this mess but...can they? Or is "what's done is done"?

Winner! Winner! Chicken Dinner...?

Just one more question I had -- when everyone was getting into the sub and they were getting shot at by Widmore's guys why didn't NotLocke go all Smoke Monster on them? So many questions, although the previews for next week seem to make clear that there is a right and wrong side to be on in this whole mess--good and evil and all that jazz.

Lost Wednesdays: The Last Recruit

Underhelmed? Me, too.

I understand that this episode was all about setting up the action to come, but when is the action actually going to get here? Why are they hoarding it? There are only a few episodes left. Spread. The. Love. I imagine the writers huddled together with all the good stuff clutched to their chests, parcelling out bits and pieces, probably saving the very best for May sweeps. Ugh. I'm impatient on a good day, this is just driving me bananas.

How much did I want to hit Jack when he was talking to NotLocke? A lot. I know LOST is famous for characters who never ask the obvious follow up, but this was ridiculous. Can someone please, please, please find out what this thing is? You would think someone would be a little more interested in the provenance of a smoke monster who can shape shift. Maybe its just me? Of course all Jack wanted to know was whether the MiB was Christian. WHO CARES?!

I did like how everyone was coming together in the flash sideways, although some things were just weird. Ilana The Lawyer seemed to assume that there was only one Claire Littleton in all of Australia. Loved Sawyer and Kate at the precinct, loved Sawyer arresting Sayid (great garden hose bit), and it was great to see John on Jack's operating table. It wasn't a surprise, but I wonder if Jack will be able to "fix" John. (I think it was fitting when MiB said Locke wasn't a believer he was a sucker, was probably true.) I would totally watch a Sawyer-Miles cop spinoff.

So I'm thinking that, for once, Jack is probably right. The Losties are not supposed to leave the island. I hate that Sawyer is wrong, but I can't blame him because he doesn't know that one of them is supposed to be an effin' cork or whatever. No one on this island talks or explains so how are they supposed to know? Jack jumping off the boat seemed to echo Sawyer jumping out of the helicopter. Wonder if Sawyer will end up wanting to get back as badly as Jack did.

How creepy was it when Locke was all like, "You're with me now." Yeesh. Talk about deal with the devil. So is Jack all claimed now like Sayid? And Windmore revoking his deal with Sawyer was not cool, Charles, not cool at all. Wonder how long before Tina Fey/Liz Lemon/Zoe bites it. And no way Sayid killed Desmond. I'm just surprised MiB is so easy to lie to. I guess he can't scan people in Locke form?

I was dying when Sawyer said that Frank looked like someone who just walked off the set of a Burt Reynolds' movie. Dying.

Nice Jin and Sun reunion, finally, although the way they shot it I kept thinking one or the other was going to get zapped by Widmore's electric fence thing. Strange that they chose to speak English to each other, but whatevs. Stranger things have happened on this show. Glad Sun doesn't have to cart around pen and paper anymore.

So maybe meddling Desmond as the new Jacob and Jack as the new MiB? Ah, who am I kidding. I don't know what the hell is going on here.

Lost Wednesdays: Everybody Loves Hugo

WARNING: POST CONTAINS EPISODE SPOILERS

So Hurley is stepping up to be the leader of the group (even if he doesn't know what he's doing) while Jack is hanging back, being all trusting-like. Huh. Will wonders never cease. Could they be setting it up for Hurley to be Jacob's replacement? In a lot of ways he seems to have the least to go back to in the "real world"--lotto win aside. His flash sideways was also one of the more depressing ones, even once Libby appeared.

I was never emotionally invested in the Libby-Hugo relationship, but I was happy to see that their meeting again in the parallel universe has helped moved things along. It was interesting to see how the two realities were bleeding together for Libby (leading her right back to the mental institution--wonder why she was there in the first place). Thing is I was really interested in the on-island action last night and could have done without all the Hurley-Libby kissy kissy. Let's move things along! I did like the Pierre Chang sighting at the beginning.

As soon as Desmond asked NotLocke, "You brought me all the way out here for this?" I knew he was getting shoved into that hole. Also NotLocke asking him why he wasn't scared -- Desmond's non-fear in direct contrast to Hurley's constant fear. Of course the island isn't done with Desmond and he won't die. He is one of the characters I hope everything works out for. Another should-have-been-a-surprise-but-wasn't was Ilana blowing herself to bits. Gesticulating wildly with all that unstable dynamite in her bag? Not. Smart.

So while Richard and Miles are off trying to blow up the plane (loved Miles when he said he'd seen the smoke monster in action and it didn't seem like it wanted to talk), all the people NotLocke had been waiting for just show up at his camp. I guess things are going full steam ahead from here. His "Hello Jack" was pretty chilling.

I guess we got one answer: The Whispers. Not a shocker, but good to get confirmation. Seems the island is purgatory for some. I just can't believe Hurley didn't play 21 Questions with Michael. Hello?! Seemingly omniscient dead guy in front of you and you don't grill him? Dumb. Dumb. Dumb.

The ending was pretty great with Desmond running over Locke, but he should have backed over him, too. I don't think it will be that easy to kill him. There are surely problems ahead. I guess this is all leading up to the Losties remembering and joining forces and...what? Returning to the underwater island?!

Lost Wednesdays: Happily Ever After

WARNING: POST CONTAINS EPISODE SPOILERS

This episode was meh for me. I love Desmond, I love Desmond-Penny, and I liked seeing some bleeding between the two realities (and getting pseudo confirmation from Daniel that it was the bomb that caused the split). Ditto spooky Eloise. Thing is I'm over Charlie and Daniel and Claire, and all the love stuff felt kind of syurpy and heavy handed. I guess only a near death experience allowed Charlie to remember his oh-so-amazing relationship with Claire? And, by extension, Charlie figures what better way for Desmond to see he is NOT crazy than to drive Desmond's car off the pier. Right. Makes perfect sense.

I did like the moment in the water with Charlie's hand and Desmond meeting Penny at the stadium where he had originally encountered Jack. (Prophetic words about seeing Jack in another life, brother.) So I guess Eloise has always known what is going on and she's still stressing that "whatever happened, happened." Weird to see Widmore as the doting family man. I also wonder who Penny's mother is (do we know this?) and why her last name in the parallel universe is Milton?  I guess now we have another philosopher in the mix.

Weird, but when there was a close up of Desmond's eyes in the hospital I actually thought they were Jack's. And good to see Minkowski from the freighter as George the Driver.

I wonder if Widmore and Des will finally be friends if Desmond does save the island?

So if remembering someone they loved was enough to make Des, Charlie and Daniel remember the island what does that say about Sawyer meeting Kate and seemingly not remembering anything? I guess we'll have to see if Juliet brings it all back for him? *fingers crossed*

Lost Wednesdays: The Package

"Some people just aren't meant to be together." Hmmm...could Keamy's words be prophetic? Let's hope not. I've waited long enough for a Jin-Sun reunion, I don't need one of them to go and croak or blow up again. Somehow they need to get home to their daughter. How sweet was Jin when he was looking at those photos? (And yay to the Dharma shout out, bringing Jin to the brainwashing room where Carl was held).

I think this episode was solid. I liked seeing a little backbone from Sun, spoke more to the woman she had become off the island (the one doing deals with Widmore) than the one she was when she originally arrived. I liked the little surprises in the flash sideways--Jin and Sun not being married, Mikhail getting shot in the eye (!), Sun being pregnant, Jin and Sun still being in love when landing at LAX. I wonder what it can all mean and how these two realities will eventually tie together.

On island I think things could be moving faster. I don't need heartwarming scenes with Jack and Sun and a tomato. Sun seemed to have so much animosity for Jack off island I'm surprised she's pledged to trust him now. Does she not remember how Jack and Kate promised to get Jin off the freighter and then left him there?! Stop making promises you can't keep Jack! Anyway, the Widmore-NotLocke showdown was interesting, although I wanted to SCREAM when the Man In Black asked if Widmore knew his name and all Widmore said was, "Well, you're obviously not John Locke."  UGH. You are killing me, people. Just killing me. Slowly.

I. Love. Miles. When Sun lost her ability to speak English and he was all like, "And we're supposed to buy that?" I almost died. Love. Love. Love. It was also great when Sawyer asked NotLocke if he couldn't just pouf and fly over to the next island. No? Yeah, because that'd be ridiculous. (It does make sense that the MiB would need all the candidates to leave the island with him--and Kate's not one of them!)

He is not on anyone's side. Okay?

"A wise man once said that a war was coming to this island, and I think it just got here." Woohoo. The Smoke Monster is mad. Charlie Widmore it is ON.

Desmond!

And it was Desmond locked up on the sub!  Ha! I knew it. (At least I called one thing on this crazy show.) Poor Penny. I don't think this is going to end well. Thoughts?
